About us.

This site is completely free and intended for users that are looking for a way to manage their bird records, mostly finches, but also parrots and other birds. It includes full birds species database.

The best way to start is just to register and try to create several records to begin. You can find documentation and screenshots for Bird Breeder Database below and the latest updates and extra information is available in the forum section. You also can ask any question related to this site or propose other features and improvements in the forum section. This site is still new and we do updates and improvements on a regular basis.

The site is designed as a modification to phpBB3 forum, so you have full access to all futures of phpBB board. You can find a lot of information about the use of the forum on the, or in the FAQ for the forum. Below we will discuss only the Bird Breeder Database part as it is unique to this site.

The site is optimized for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari. Some functions are limited when using Safari from iPhone or iPad. The site should work with Internet Explorer, but because of the bugs with displaying buttons inside tables, some tables will not look the way we want them to be. Older versions of IE do not support SVG graphic. Pages will not look the way we intended.

You can access this site from a smartphone, iPhone or Tablet.  Some parts are retina display optimized.

Manual for Finch Breeder Database.

Front Page.

The moment you log in you will be presented with 'Front Page' (the image is on the right). On your left you have a sidebar panel for fast navigation; in the center, you have a list of the main sections of this site, and on the right the Calendar.

My Birds - the main section to access the list of all your bird records.

All Species - list of all species of birds available for the selection. I update the list on a regular basis with new species of birds. If you don't see your birds you can ask to add your species in the forum. This section allows you to select the species available to fast selection when you create a bird profile.

My Cages - list of all your cages. This information is used in birds profiles. You can manage names, descriptions, and types of your cages in this section. It is best to manage the cages from the 'My Events' section.

My Pairs and Clutches - list of all your pairs and from pairs to clutches and eggs. This section is designed to manage breeding pairs. You can keep well-documented records of clutches and create new bird records for the chicks faster.

My Events - this section was created to keep track of your birds with minimum time consumption. Often when you treat your birds or observe behavior it involves several or even a big number of individuals. 'My Events' allows you to create events that include many individuals instead of creating records for each bird. This information can be accessed fast from birds profiles. 'My Events' is the best place to keep medical treatment of your birds.

My LogBooks - you can keep everything that wasn't included in previous sections. Each Log Book consists of logs and could be linked to birds for fast access.

My Photos - gallery of all pictures uploaded in birds profiles. You can add pictures from 'Bird Profiles'. Each account has its limit of space for images if you need more space please ask an administrator to increase your limit.

My Contacts - list of your contacts used in birds profiles.

Statistic - charts for your birds and over the site.

Calendar - displays events from My Event section and information from clutches: dates when eggs were laid, first incubation dates, due dates as a reminder.

There are other pages that aren't displayed on the 'Front Page', but you can access them from other parts. They include:

Genealogy Page - You can access it by clicking on the bird name from 'My Birds' table. You can get a view of the parents and off-springs of the selected bird.

Printing and saving reports - You select the template of the file you create for print or backup. You can access it from 'Bird Profile' or 'My Birds' table.

SignatureYou can create a signature that displays the icons of your birds.

Backups- this page allows you to access older copies of the database. Only some copies are available, but you always can ask the administrator for another date. We make a copy of database at least ones a week. To access this page go to ' Options' from the 'Front Page'.

Bird Profile

To begin click 'Add New Bird' from 'Front Page' or from 'My Birds' section to create a new bird record. The best way is to start with older birds and move to the younger since it is better to enter parents and then offsprings.
It will open a window (see image on the left) with only basic information to enter. Remember that you are able to change any field later.
Names/codes are important to recognized your birds. It could be several words. (For the names ideas check Random name generator at
Select the species from the list. When you are the first time here the list is empty except for 'other' and 'hybrid', so click 'Select Other Species' button to select the new species of bird. It will open the window with a long list of bird organized by the family, genus, and species. On top of the table, you can see other orders for parrots and doves. Find your bird and select and confirm your selection at the bottom of the table. Next time you click 'Add New Bird' the previously selected species will be in the drop-list. (The drop-list could be managed from 'All Species' section.)
After you finished with 'Sex' and 'Status' click 'CONTINUE'.
The next window will open. It has many more fields to enter. As you start to enter the information you will see that more options will be available to you.
If you selected sex as a male or a female,  'Sexing Method' line will appear.
When you select origin the fields for parents will be shown.  In the parents' list, you could see only males and females of previously selected species. If you selected species as a hybrid you can select any male or female as a parent of your bird.
If you check 'Identification with bands' it will show section to enter bands information. For more information about entering bands see Bands section below.
You can upload a single picture to each profile or use already uploaded image from other bird profile. Click on [photo] to open window for upload pictures. To see all images that you upload go to 'My Photos' section.  Images are displayed in a different section of your database. You can upload only JPG images and they should be not more than 500KB. Bigger images will not improve anything: they usually scale to a smaller size for proper display. However, original images are used to print reports and could significantly increase the size of the files that they generate and slow down the performance. I would recommend to size your images to up to 800x800 pixels for the best view on a screen and for print. Bigger sizes will not improve the quality of your print.
You also can select a different icon for your bird. By default, you get an icon of a normal male of selected species, but often you can select another icon that fits your bird better.  Click on the birds' icon that is located next to the [photo] to change it.

You can select the cage from the drop-list or create new cage by clicking 'Add New Cage' button.
Cages, status, sex, and species are used for fast search in 'My Birds' table and it is highly recommended to enter them.
At the bottom of your table, you will see Events associated with this bird.  Please read about the use of events in the 'My Events' section.

All Species

all speciesThis section allows you to manage the list of the species of birds in your profile. Species organized by families, genus and species. To select a new species of birds just click on "Check icon-" to turn them green and confirm your selection at the bottom of the table. By default, this section displays order Passeriformes, where all finches belong. You can change the order to Psittaciformes - parrots, Columbiformes - doves and pigeons or others by selecting other order from the dropbox on top of the table. We have over 10000 species of birds. For some selected species of birds, you can see subspecies or types available.

If you don't see your species of birds make sure that you click to go to the full list or use the search function. We have a complete list of the species of birds.

If you want to see all icons available to you, click 'see all icons' on the right top corner of the screen.

If you go to Web links you can add new links that describe the species.

My Birds
After you finish entering the information click 'Save'. It will bring you to 'My Birds' section (table). You can add another bird record by clicking 'Add New Bird'. You can see an example of 'My Birds' section after I entered birds on your right.
The sidebar panel now has Zebra and Gouldian Finch section under 'My Birds'. You could see here all species of birds you enter in the database.
Under 'Advanced Search' you can see navigation buttons for fast display birds in a selected category. In the first line you can see the icons that represent species of birds; in this case Zebra and  Gouldian Finch.
You can also see other icons: icons in the top right corner represent status of the birds ( in-stock,  deceased, sold and  lost), icons in the second line on the left  with the names of the cages allow to hide or display birds from specific cages and icons on the right represent sex, so I can display specific sexes.
If we look at the contents of the table we can see that the first column has a counter and if you move your cursor you will see a unique number for each bird. You can't change it. It is ID in this database.
The second column has icons that represent birds. These icons are assigned by default based on the species. For most species of birds, you can change it. To change the icon double-click on it. It will open a new window to select a new icon. You should see the checkbox 'Use Default ICON'. Uncheck this box to see the other icons available to you. For some species, this display could be customized to simplify the selection. In the case of Gouldian Finch, you have a long list to choose from, because there are many variations for this species (image on the left). For other species, the selection window will look different. (Image on the right for Goldbreasted Waxbill). You can see all the icons available from 'All Species' section. Just click 'see all icons' on the right top from 'Species' table.
The third column has a checkbox. You can select birds by clicking on it. You can select birds also by clicking 'Select All' button.
Next is the 'Bird Name' column. If you click on it you will go to Genealogy page where you can see parents and offsprings of the selected bird.
Cage name brings you to the selected cage; where you can see all the birds that are in that cage and where you can control cage name, type, and memo.
Bands column has icons that represent birds legs with bands on them. If you are using simple plastic colored bands you could see the place and the color. Read more about bands in the 'Bands' section. The status column has icons representing bird status.
Next are columns with the date of birth, the date when the bird was acquired and date of death and link to the gallery. The last column 'Edit' send you to 'Bird Profile'.
There are some options you can change in 'My Birds' table. If you click on (+) in 'Advanced Search' it will expand the panel where you can select the setting for default display. In my case, I want to hide everything that is no longer in-stock. So, I pressed the status icons for deceased, sold and lost to turn them red, select order by id and click 'Save setting as default'. The next time when I open this table all deceased, sold and lost birds will be hidden and if I need I can always display them by changing the status buttons to green. You will see that in time as you add more and more records hiding birds that are no longer in-stock simplify management of your current birds.
You also can change the order in which your species are displayed in the Manage Panel and the order of the species icons in My Birds table. Go to your Setup. Click Species Order and reorganize your species icons the way you like.  Just drag and drop them.
There is an option to switch to a Picture Mode   . In this mode, you can do the same things as in Table Mode, but at the same time, you can see thumbnails of your birds. If you uploaded pictures, you will see them, if you didn't, you will see big or small icons that represent your birds. These icons are different if you select different small icons for your birds. The screenshot on the right is from my birds' collection.
Use 'Move to archive' button to remove old records from 'My Birds' table. You can access an archive by pressing Archive at the top of the table. You can move birds from and into an archive. When birds are in the archive their profiles are locked from changes. You can only move deceased, lost and sold birds into the archive.

My Cages
You can manage your cages in this section. An example of a screenshot is on your right.
The 'Cage' table displays the list of all your cages, cages types, memo and you can see the number of the birds in each cage and the list of the birds if you move your cursor over the bird number.
You can add a new cage by pressing at the bottom of the table and you can edit information about cages by clicking on 'edit' icon. You can create new cages not only from 'Cage' table but also from bird profile.
The easiest way to manage your birds' cages is with Events. Just select all birds, click 'create new event' and change the cage at the bottom of the event screen.

This section is to manage your breeding pairs. To create a new pair go to 'My Birds' table select two birds and click 'Create a Pair' button. If you've already created the same pair, the system will open this pair and show clutches section. To create a new clutch click 'Add new Clutch' button. To edit the clutch information click 'edit' icon . It will open window (image on the left).
Give a name to a clutch, select the first brooding date and the due date. You can add any additional information in the memo section. In the Due Date field, you can see buttons 12,13,14,15 and 16. They represent the number of days from the First Brooding Date for the easy count. Click on a date and Due Date will be calculated from First Brooding Date. Some numbers are in bold - they represent the incubation date for this species. The information about First Brooding Date and Due Date will be display on the Calendar.
After you save the changes information will appear in the parent window.
To add a new egg click at the bottom of the clutch.
The new 'Egg Window' is on the right.
It is similar to 'Clutch Window' but with different fields.
You still can give an egg a name. You can remove and/or change parents.
Select date the egg was laid and hatched. Select the color of the chick.  (The color is used for Gouldian and other species.)
You have the same memo for extra information.
You can create a new bird record fast from the 'Egg Window'. Just click 'Create new bird'  and give it a name. Information about parents, species, dates of birth and color will be passed to the bird profiles. Color will be passed to Phenotype mutation.
If you already created the bird profile for this egg you can select it by clicking 'Select bird'. It will open a new window to select a bird that you want to link to this egg. (Information between an egg and a bird profile won't be synchronized).
After you select or add a bird it will appear at the bottom of the window. Don't forget to save changes.

The screen with pairs is on the left. You can see icons representing the birds on the left with bird names next to them. The next column displays statistic for the pairs. The first number represents the number of clutches, second, the number of eggs that were laid by these pairs and the last, the number of chicks hatched from eggs. The last column display bird status. It is possible to change bird icons inside this section too. Just double click on them to open the icon window to select other icons.
There are two buttons on the top of the table. First is hide and display pairs that are not in-stock and the 'Options' button. If you click Setup you can change the order the pairs are displayed and hide pairs that are no longer in-stock by default. Look for the setup buttons on other pages to change default settings.
The screen for clutches is on the left.
You can use  Options button to change some display options (hide or display color and bands columns) and change clutches order.  The setup affects all pairs and clutches.
To print this page use 'HTML Print View' button.

You can delete only pairs that don't have any clutches and you can delete only clutches that don't have any eggs.

My Events

You can manage multiple birds fast with 'My Events'. From 'My Birds' table select birds and click 'Create Event'. It will open a new window. You need to select the Date and Time of the event, select category (categories are important for future search and print). You will see the list of birds affected by this event. You can change it by adding new birds or removing some. In the memo section, you need to describe this event. If you are moving your birds into other cage or changing its status on sold, deceased or lost you can check the 'Change Profile' and select desirable fields in 'Cage' and 'Status'. It is a good idea to use this section for most events like "move, medication, observations, sell..." This way you can keep track of different events later and it takes a minimum of time to record it as for one bird or for many. If you buy or sell several birds at ones you need to enter information only one time. You can use 'Print' with selected categories from 'My Events' section if you want to see all financial like buy and sell, or all medical for all your birds, or for individual birds from their profiles.

You can keep all the rest of your records (documents) in LogBooks.  This manual is written in one of the LogBook. A LogBook consists of Logs. Each LogBook has a title and each Log has a title too. Logbooks are displayed in the Manage section on the left part of your screen for fast access and they organized by the last modification date. You can share your logbooks with your friends. To do this go to the list of your Logbooks and under 'share' click on the link. You can create permissions for friends, so they can read or read and edit your logbooks. You can't share logbooks that somebody else is sharing with you. You can only share your own logbooks.  You can organize your logs inside logbook by 'ID' or by the log title. Logbooks could be linked to your birds which helps to find the right logbook for your birds.

In most cases, the use of Events is more practical. Events were designed to save you time.

My Photos  (Updated October 31, 2011)

This section displays all images of your birds that you uploaded to the database. You can access your Bird Profile () and Genealogy() pages fast by clicking on appropriate icons under the pictures. You also can see full-size images that you have uploaded when you click on the bird thumbnail images.

Use setup on top of the pictures to change the display order of your pictures.
Each account has its limit of space for pictures. You can see how much space you have at the bottom of the screen.

Notes: My Photos will be removed since we already have a better Picture Mode in 'My Birds' table.

Backup and Recovery - this section was disabled since fall 2013
At the moment of writing this manual you only can access backup files without recovery option available to the user. We backup database on a weekly basis, so in case of something happens to the server we can restore your information. However, in case you make some changes that you want to reverse you can access backups. To do it go to your 'Front Page' and click  Options
button and then select Backups. You will need to select a backup point and restore the backup database. You will need to keep a window with a timer running to prevent others from changing the backup database. Only one user can control the backup database at the same time. So after you finish with backup database please exit the window with the timer, so someone else can use it too. There is no limit on time of how long you can access backup, but if I see that some users overuse it I can put a limit on how long you can access the backup.

Bands      (Updated - May 14, 2011)

You can enter band information from bird profile. You can enter up to four bands, two on each leg. (Enlarge example of a band icon is on your right).  Band icons look like two bird legs with bands are displayed in different parts of the database for easy identification.

You enter information from a bird profile. Check the box 'Identification with band(s)' and then select your bird's bands. It is very easy to select a color, just click on the color boxes.

There are two types of bands that the system generates; for HTML pages PNG images (28x21 pixels)   and for PDF files PNG images (280x212 pixels). The images for PDF files are not only bigger but also display more information. Below are the examples.

If you move the mouse over a band icon the band information will be displayed.

The calendar is a new addition to this site.  You can see your Calendar on the right side of your Front PageCalendar displays events that already happened and reminds of upcoming.  Calendar displays the information from 'My Events' section and from 'Clutches'. All 'My Events' are displayed on your calendar. From clutches Calendar displays 'First Brooding Date', the dates when eggs were laid with an icon of the hen and if you select a due date for a clutch the calendar will display it too.  You can change the dates that Calendar displays by clicking on the calendar icon() and selecting another day.  By default, the calendar starts from yesterday and displays 7 days. Today is marked as white.

Genealogy Page

You can access the genealogy page by clicking on a bird name from 'My Birds' table. You should be able to see parents and offsprings of the selected bird. By clicking on the parents or offsprings you can open their genealogy pages. If you click on the already selected bird from Genealogy page it will open the 'Bird record'.
Offsprings are organized by the year they were born. Under each bird, you can see their age if they are in-stock. When the age displayed as like 5+ it means that the actual age of the bird is unknown and the bird is at least 5 years old or older based on the date it was acquired. The system will display birds pictures that you uploaded, or if they are not available system icons. Small icons that are used in different parts of the site have bigger equivalents for many species of birds and for different mutations. If we haven't created the big, full-size image yet the smaller icons will be displayed.  We create new big icons base of the demand for the small equivalent icons.

Genetics and Genetic Forecast

RTPF Genetic Forecast Gouldian Genetic ForecastThere are two types of pages for genetics available right now. Genetics for an individual bird that you can access from bird's profile, Mutation section and Genetic Forecast for offsprings. Right now genetics is available only for a few species (RTPF, BFPF, Green SingerEmblema, Owl FinchGouldians ). (Budgie, Shaft-tail Finch, and Java Finch are under construction). You can access Genetic Forecast for offsprings from 'My Pairs' section and Species section. You don't have to be logged-in to access Genetic Forecast. The screen shot with a link for RTPF genetic forecast is on your left and for Gouldian Finches is on your right. If you move your cursor over icons that represent mutations pop-up window will show the description of the mutation. You can create a forecast by phenotype and genotype. After you selected forecast use link at the bottom of the screen to point to the selected page.

When we talk about icons we mean the bird icons. We are using 'Bird Icons' to represent the birds and they come in different sizes.

In 'My Birds', 'My Pairs', 'My Events', 'All Species' sections you can see small icons that represent birds.

Icons like these:

These small icons are only 16x16 pixels and are the base of all other icons. There are over three hundred of them with over 90 just for Gouldian Finches. Some of them have other, bigger size equivalents 32x32, 48x48, 128x128, or even 256x256 pixels. The bigger size icons are used in Genealogy Pages and to generate PDF files for print. The big icons are only displayed if you don't upload an image in bird profiles. If you uploaded an image then the uploaded image will be displayed instead.

When you select a small icon for Gouldian Finch or other bird you automatically define the bigger icons too, even when they are not displayed and look alike in this size. The description should help you to make the right selection.

Since the making of big icons is a time-consuming process their number is limited. You can see all the big icons here. If you see any mistakes please contact administrator ASAP.

I hope in the future I can find time and inspiration to create high-resolution icons for most of the popular species of finches and their subspecies and mutations.

Printing and saving reports (Updated January 15, 2012)

You can access  'Print and Save' page from the 'My Birds' table and from 'Bird profile' by clicking the 'Print' button. You can select one or many birds to print at once. Just check 'Check Box' of birds you want to include from the 'My Birds' table and click 'Print'. It will open a new page where you can select the type of the file that server will generate. Right now we have templates to create HTML and PDF files and option to backup records in Excel file. (Excel backup is still in development and not all information will be transfer.)
Some PDF format supports only English, but the latest PDF Pedigree support UTF-8 format, which mean that you can use any of your languages. HTML is using UTF-8 format and lets you print reports in your language. If you change your language then report will be printed in the new language of your choice.
At the top of the page, you can see the list of the birds you had selected. You can add or remove birds from that panel. Examples of pdf templates are on your right. For each template, you can specify extra options. You can include pictures, Medical History, Notes, Events and more. Events have different categories and you can specify which categories you want to print. You can include parents, grandparents or great-grandparents images and leg bands icons.
Leg Bands icons that system generate for PDF are different from icons for HTML pages. They are bigger in size and display more information.

You can create a signature that displays the icons of your in-stock birds. An example of a signature image is on your right.
In my case, you can see the icons representing Green Singing FinchesOrange Cheeked Waxbills, and others.
To access your signature go to 'Front Page' and click  Options
button. (Image on your left). You have to allow signature (by checking Allow signature check-box). Click save to renew data. Now you should be able to see your image. You can change signature image size: width and height (Auto height is best to automatically adjust the size to fit all your icons) and background color (transparent background looks good against any color). The system creates an image using Alfa transparency. You can reorganize your icons from the box below the signature image; use drag and drop. Save your changes and review your image.  Use the link that provided to enter it in this or another forum in the signature section. When you put the image in the signature part of phpBB forum don't forget to put your image address inside . When you change your birds the information will be updated right away. Have fun. Don't forget that you can change icons of your birds from 'Bird Profile' and 'My Birds' or 'My Pairs' tables.

This page displays the current statistic for your in-stock birds and over the site. It generates charts using 'Google Chart Tools'. If you experience a problem with interactive charts in Internet Explorer, please, use an older version of image charts. You can see a screenshot of an interactive chart on your right. It shows the most popular species of birds. If you click on it, it will show the name of the species and the number of birds. You also have access to a statistic by countries with a significant number of active users like Australia, Canada, USA, and others. The country list is created based on the number of active users. When we have enough users from other countries the system will add those countries to the list.
Statistic includes only birds from users that have been login to this site in the last 90 days. You can see the history of this chart in the forum section.

Other functions

Find a bird by a band number/code.

You access it from 'Front Page' by clicking on  in 'My Birds' panel. As of now you can search only your birds. You don't have to enter all band's codes; you can enter any part of it and click seach.
